Introduction
Welcome to the Active Schools (Central) Coach and Volunteer Education booklet for 2009. This booklet is designed to help teachers, volunteers and sports coaches who work with Active Schools to get more information about relevant coaching courses that may run in and around Aberdeenshire over the course of the next year.
This booklet contains information on a wide range of sport specific and generic coach education courses which are being organised by Active Schools, Local/National Governing Bodies and other training providers. If the course you are looking for is not being directly organised by Active Schools, we would be happy to contact the relevant course organiser to reserve a place for you.
Format of Active Schools Training Programme
As far as possible Active Schools will deliver training in a 2 hour workshop format. These sessions will tend to be twilight sessions running after school. Courses run by governing bodies may take a different format and may take longer to complete.
If you are unable to make any of the courses being run, don't worry! Active Schools are happy to help organise courses out with those dates, but will tend to be organised once there is sufficient demand. The team are happy to keep notes of interest on file, so that courses can be organised once the minimum number needed for that particular course have been achieved.
As you will see the duration and cost of the courses detailed vary depending on the provider. The majority of the courses detailed are designed to give participants an introduction to a particular sport or activity and will concentrate on the basic skills of how to run sessions. There are also a range of generic courses which are designed to increase each volunteer's knowledge and skills base e.g. first aid and child protection courses.
The following contents page lists the courses we are currently able to offer. To book a space on any of the courses, please complete the application form at the end of this booklet and send it back to your Active School Coordinator. Details of your local ASC can be found at the back of this booklet. Where there is a fee involved in attending the course, Active Schools may offer to help volunteers to subsidise the cost, depending on the commitment of volunteer hours and budgetary constraints.
Grampian Coaching and the Coaching Pathway
With many of the National Governing Bodies now signed up to deliver the UK Coaching Certificate qualification (UKCC), the majority of the courses detailed in this booklet do not offer an official qualification (although many will give certification). However, for those individuals who are interested in taking their coaching further, included below are details of the UKCC courses which are likely to be organised in the Aberdeen area on a regular basis. The framework of the UKCC allows individuals to develop their skills base so that they can move from coaching at a participation level right through to elite level if they so wish.
Active Schools are happy to answer any queries regarding coach and volunteer education. However, more detailed information can also be obtained from Grampian Coaching. Grampian Coaching is the continued collaboration between the Sports Development Departments and Sports Council's of Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen City and Moray together with the Coaching Network of sport scotland. Grampian Coaching office is a central point for all information concerning coach and volunteer education, including UKCC and Sport Coach UK courses.
UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC)
The UK Coaching Certificate is an endorsement of sport specific coach education qualifications that are aligned to an agreed framework. By creating a recognised standard for coach education the UKCC will make it easier to identify a quality coach in any sport at any level and contribute immeasurably to the professionalization of coaching. Active Schools Training Programme 2009
The following sports have currently had their coaching programme approved to be part of the UKCC:
Athletics Badminton Basketball Cricket Cycling Equestrian Gymnastics Hockey Judo Netball Rowing Rugby Union Rugby League Swimming Table Tennis Tennis Triathlon Squash
The cost of UKCC courses is around £100, although some governing bodies have subsidised the cost of the courses to bring the price down for participants. For further information regarding local training opportunities and the coaching pathway, please contact:
